Senior Tax Exchange Program (STEP)
The Colby School District has offered a Senior Tax Exchange Program (STEP) since 1997. Senior citizens are given the opportunity to work in the District and apply their earnings toward payment of school property taxes. To qualify you must be 62 years of age or older, receive Social Security and have taxable property within the Colby School District. The STEP worker is compensated at $7.25 per hour with a maximum of 66 hours per household per calendar year. The compensation is distributed bi-annually in the form of a two party check made out to the worker and the appropriate treasurer. The District does limit the number of STEP workers each year.
Examples of jobs are: reading with a child, grounds keeping, shelving books, assisting with computers, clerical work, tutoring, preparing bulletin boards, construction projects, etc.
